Many of you, Group Home Entrepreneurs, know I am a firm believer that the American Dream Still exists.

This AM, we did podcast #2 with Tasha (You can click here to listen to Podcast #1), it reminded me that we must all work hard and execute daily on our goals and dreams.

Like many of our Group Home Entrepreneurs do that embody the American Dream!

That said, here is the story of Sriracha Hot Sauce…..

In 1980, a Vietnamese refugee arrived in Los Angeles and began crafting a new spicy sauce. 40 years later, his sauce has developed a cult following and grown into an $80 million business.

His life is the embodiment of the American Dream.

David Tran was born in 1945 in Vietnam.

Beginning around 1975, Tran started experimenting with making spicy sauces, using peppers from his brother’s farm and selling the sauces in nearby villages.

The family operation quickly scaled as the sauces gained in popularity.

In 1978, the Vietnamese government began to crack down on the ethnic Chinese population in Vietnam. Tran and his family, being of Chinese origin, decided to flee the country.

He soon found himself with thousands of other refugees on a freighter – The Huey Fong.

After a brief stay in Hong Kong, David Tran was granted asylum in the United States. At first, he was in Boston, but a conversation with his brother-in-law in Los Angeles would seal his fate.

“Do they have red peppers in Los Angeles?” he asked. They did, so Tran flew to LA.

Within one month, David Tran had started his company, Huy Fong Foods (named after the freighter that took him out of Vietnam), and was making spicy sauce.

His goal: to bring the flavors of his country and region to these new markets and his fellow immigrants in America.

He made several spicy sauces, but his signature sauce was inspired by a traditional condiment from a town in Thailand called Si Racha. The sauce had a simple list of ingredients: chilis, vinegar, salt, sugar, and garlic. He named it Sriracha after the town in Thailand.

David Tran began selling the sauce to local Asian restaurants and grocers, giving his pitch and taste tests out of the back of an old, beat up van. His first HQ was a small bottling facility in LA Chinatown, but the business quickly outgrew its humble beginnings.

By 1987, with demand soaring, the business relocated to a 68,000 square foot facility in Rosemead, California.

In 2010, it moved into its current HQ, a sprawling 23 acre compound in Irwindale, California with office, production, and warehouse space.

Along the way, Sriracha sauce became an icon with a cult following. People dressed up as Sriracha for Halloween. Lexus made a Sriracha car. People tattooed pictures of Sriracha bottles on their bodies.

In 2009, @BonAppetit Magazine named it its ingredient of the year.

Today, Huy Fong Foods generates over $80 million in annual revenue.

It remains family-owned, run primarily by eight members of David Tran’s family. Imitators have come and have gone. David Tran did not trademarked the Sriracha name but everyone knows the original when they taste it.

David Tran’s story is, in many ways, the embodiment of the American Dream. A refugee who came to America and built an amazing business through sheer effort and creativity. Next time you put Sriracha on your food, tip the hat to David Tran and his incredible story.

One of my FREE 10-PART COURSE client and a group home owner texted me yesterday (yes, he has my private #).

He is a younger dude – 21 years old – trying to get onto the fast track of success. Here is what he told me:

“Andy, many of my friends don’t have jobs. They know that school is a racket and don’t want $160,000 of debt when they get out. They are pissed and don’t have anything else to do but screw off and protest – and in some cases do worse things. What should I do?”

Ha! I wish I really knew the “perfect” answer….unfortunately I don’t. What I do know is that when I was young – probably 7th and 8th grade – I was more than happy to be a punk! So I get it….fortunately, by the time I hit about 14 or 15 I realized that money was a true separator and I wanted to be in the “haves” rather than the “have not’s”

I definitely received some direction during my youth about the qualities and characteristics of successful people – hard work, industriousness, focus, sacrifice etc.

BUT NOBODY EVER GAVE ME A SPECIFIC DETAILED ROADMAP LIKE I PROVIDE IN MY FREE 10-PART COURSE

So what did I tell this young man?

Keep being an example. Be the role model. Eventually, your friends will come to you and ask you for guidance, help or employment.

I left it at that. He is on Group Home #2 and hopes to have 4 of them by the end of the year.

How To Take Your Tenants To Court If and When They Screw You Over

This AM, one of my new managers (from the group home that generates $10,000 per month with bunk beds – see video below) texted me to let me know that one of the tenants had disputed the rental agreement and credit card charge.

He is a new manager, so I told him to start documenting everything. When you do so, it gives you an upper hand to go after them later down the line.

An example of this is the image above of a judgment I received yesterday in the amount of $6,833.39 against a truly HORRIBLE tenant.

Most of the time we don’t bother with this, but sometimes if the tenant has caused property destruction etc – it is worth doing!

Why?

Because later down the line, they may want to pay it to get it off their credit!

Also, b/c it would not be fair for another property manager to deal with a HORRIBLE tenant that you failed to go after because you either did not know how or were too lazy….

These judgments compound at 5% annually (unless specified differently in your agreement) and can add up over time.

This little judgment turns into $11,000 in a little less than 10 years!

In a nutshell, here is the step-by-step process for obtaining judgments:

1. Document everything

2. Obtain copies of receipts, photos of the damage, bids and checks written to the handyman that does the repair work from the damage caused by the tenant

3. Sue them for the amount due! (it will cost about $200)

4. Bring all your evidence to trial. You have the moral highground and will win if you have everything documents.

5. File an abstract of judgement with the courts ($5 cost)

Then, sit back and wait! Not all of these will turn into money…but some will!

In fact, I have had more than my fair share call me after 10 or 15 years and THANK ME for being tough on them….I vividly remember one guy apologizing for being a “Young, dumb, punk” as he told me and thanked me for letting him better understand the word “responsibility”.
